A 6 Minute Walk
A couple years ago when my jeep was in the shop, I was riding the bus until the repairs were done. My other car was down and I was living in a suburb 30 minutes away. Every once in a while a generous co-worker would offer me a ride downtown to wait on my second bus home. On this particular sunny summer day, I left work walking fast to catch my first bus which was a good 6-7 minute walk. No one offered me a ride downtown so I knew I had to hurry so I could catch that early bus, otherwise I would would be waiting sometimes up to an hour for the next bus. At the corner there is a yellow blinking caution light and I looked to the left before I stepped off the curb and the next thing I knew, I heard tires screeching in the direction of my right as I walked out into the street. A pickup truck just missed me and swerved around me. Then I heard a lady shouting, "Do you want to die, today?" while hanging out of the right side passenger window as the pickup truck she was in sped by me. Heart racing I rushed to the curb. I was praising and thanking God all the way to the bus stop.
Overtime
A few years ago, I couldn't believe they threw a girl a bone and let me work overtime on a Saturday which was usually reserved for field personnel. I punched out and I couldn't wait to salvage the rest of my weekend. After I drove off the parking lot I made a right turn on Huber Street where the front of my company was facing. I drove less than a quarter mile to the end of the block and turned left on Mt. Elliot. It was really a nice summer afternoon kind of quiet. Just as I passed the liquor store on the right, the traffic light at Miller changed to red. When it changed to green I accelerated gently heading towards Conant. Suddenly, I saw a black Ford Explorer coming fast towards me through the intersection of Mt. Elliot and Conant. It seemed like the driver was coming way too fast to stop and I didn't have time to a loose myself from my seat belt to get out so I scooted my car as close as I could to the curb, I leaned my body towards the passenger side and braced myself for the inevitable. He passed me, missing me by inches and hit the car behind me. Immediately, I thought where did he come from? I was not aware of another car behind me. I got out to check on the driver behind me and assess the scene. People came out from nowhere making calls to 911. I looked inside the car and noticed he was sitting behind the wheel moaning and groaning. The impact of the Ford Explorer was so forceful that it bent the steering wheel forward. The driver was already on his phone telling someone of his ordeal and asked for assistance. I heard him say his arm was broken.
I looked across the street and the passengers of the Ford Explorer was sitting on the grass moaning and groaning, but they were being attended to by other spectators. It was a woman complaining of pain in her chest, and there were three minor children. The driver of the Ford Explorer never made an appearance so I don't know if he was hurt or not. Shortly, I heard the sirens of the EMS and I got back in my car and stuck around.
Again ...
